EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
