This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
