Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
